I am a fairly new candle maker and have been doing very well so far. I was wondering what those "sweat" or "steam" looking patches are on my jars when I make soy candles are, and from doing research and reading your board, they are called frost (???) . How do I prevent them? Do they eventually go away? Is it better to make container candles with soy wax or another wax? I used your coconut wax and was very happy with it. Thank you!
I'm not quite sure what that could be. I would have to see it. The frost that the soy does, is all around the candle. If the spots are just in one area of the jar, it could be from being too close to another candle while it was cooling. To avoid that most people keep their glass jars at least 6" apart. It also helps to heat up your glass jars before you pour. It helps avoid cold shock, which makes spots on the sides. Alot of people don't like them very much, but it will always happen. If you make your candles totally smooth without any spots, if you leave that candle outside when its really cold out, the wax will sperate from the glass and make a funny looking spot on the candle. All waxes work about the same. I like the coconut too. It's been working pretty good so far.
Hi Sparky, Those are actually air pockets. Try warming your jar so it feels warm to the touch but not hot. Then make sure when your candles are are cooling that they are about 6" apart. I would bet that the spots you are seeing are where the candles faced each other. The candles need to cool at the same pace all the way around. I know one candle maker that is so worried about it he actually cut the top and bottom off of coffee cans and puts them around each candle!
